Cookie policy

Every cookie this site sets, what it is for, and how to change your choice.

What cookies are

Small files a site stores on your device. Some are needed to make the site work; the rest we only use if you agree.

Your choice

Strictly necessary cookies are always on — without them you cannot sign in and the site cannot remember your language. Every other cookie and identifier is off until you turn it on, and you can change your mind at any time through Cookie settings in the page footer, or on this page. Refusing costs you nothing but measurement.

Your choice is stored in a cookie called consent for six months, after which we ask again. It records the date you decided, which is how we can show that consent was given.

Before you answer

Before you choose, and if you refuse, Google receives an anonymous count from this site: that a page was opened, which one, and that you have not agreed. It is sent without cookies and without anything that could recognise you or your device later. Like every web request, it reaches Google with your IP address and browser details. If you accept, Google Analytics starts using its cookies (_ga and _ga_ followed by our measurement property) to tell visits apart and see how the site is used; if you accept marketing too, advertising cookies are added. You can change your mind at any time through "Cookie settings" in the footer; refusing deletes the cookies again.

What we set

The tables below are generated from the same registry the site itself uses, so they cannot fall out of date.

Strictly necessary — first-party cookies, shown in the table as This site. session and signed_in keep you signed in, and exist only for people who sign in; locale remembers your language; consent stores this choice; password_reset_session, email_verification, google_oauth_state, google_code_verifier, auth_redirect, oauth_link_user_id, 2fa_challenge and email_login each carry one step of signing in; last_auth_method remembers which sign-in method you used last so it can be highlighted next time; signed_up notes, until the next page, that an account was just created, so a new sign-up is counted once; cms_preview lets an editor preview unpublished content.

Analytics — only with your consent. Google Ireland Limited provides Google Tag Manager, which loads the measurement tags from www.googletagmanager.com and sets no cookie itself, and Google Analytics, which sets _ga and _ga_ followed by the identifier of our measurement property; before you agree it sends only the cookieless pings described above. Functional Software, Inc. (Sentry) records sentryReplaySession to replay a session in which an error occurred.

Advertising — only with your consent. Google Ireland Limited sets _gcl_au, _gcl_aw and _gcl_dc to measure advertising; before you agree it sets none of them and sends only the cookieless pings described above.

Managing cookies in your browser

You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking the strictly necessary ones will break signing in.
